Better than you think, and well above average. Aug 19, 2010 The BOSS DS1 is capable of playing anything you would need distortion for. everything from that almost bluesy and crunchy sound, to rock. it can give you a "SUM41" sound, and even a "We Came as Romans" or "OM&M" sound. Very good for everything from old rock, to modern hardcore. (worth the money) lol

This isn't the sound you are looking for Mar 04, 2010 After years of playing acoustic guitar I purchased a Fender Strat and a DS-1. It does not produce the sound you are expecting, even beginner guitar players have seasoned ears and you will immediately feel cheated. Famous musicians did not record with a stock, present day DS-1.
The BOSS OD-3 can create the sounds you are accustomed to in popular music. If you cannot afford it new...buy a used one like I did. The OD-3 allows the tone of your guitar to come through the distortion. The OD-3 can be compared to higher priced, custom pedals...but at that level the differences are personal preference and really don't add to your performance.
But the DS-1 sound is unacceptable.
Use With Finesse Mar 03, 2010 I bought this pedal for use in my project studio. I wanted some creamy overdrive and increased sustain for my Strat. It's a good pedal, but it does require a little finesse. If you turn everything up to "11," it sounds pretty bad--harsh and abrasive. By backing off the output ("volume" knob) from the guitar, you can get some good rock tones, at a variety of distortion levels. Want it a little grungier? Turn up the distortion. A little edgier? Turn up the tone control, to increase the treble. Use the volume knob to control your levels into your amp or mixer. Simple. Just don't max out the guitar output going into the unit, and you'll have tons of tonal colors to play with. I'm running the pedal as a DI box, straight into the mixer, with some outboard compression from a rack mounted unit. Makes some very sweet sounds. Very easy for recording. But one caveat: This is pretty much for lead guitar, only. It's too grungy for chord work.
Good pedal, does what it claims to do. Feb 21, 2010 Good pedal, I've had it for about a month. 3 Knobs: Distortion (Dist.), Tone, and level. It can give a great Classic Rock & Rock n' Roll tone, or even a heavier, Pantera-like tone. There are a few examples of different tones in the manual if you are having trouble. I would suggest using it with a fairly large cabinet or something to that degree to give it some color. I use a small combo amp and it still sounds good. Definitely worth 40$, should the price rise again I would consider getting something else if your on a budget, don't think it is worth more than 50-60$. but good pedal, I recommend it.
