5Switchfoot is gold!  Sep 01, 2010
If you buy just one CD this year, let it be this one. There is not one bad song on this CD ... which is difficult to find in today's music market. I saw them at the Greek Theater in LA last weekend and became a fan instantly. Their music is current, thoughtful, and hypnotizing. They put on a very high energy live show. Hit the "buy" button now. You won't be sorry.

5Best Album EVER.  Aug 27, 2010
Switchfoot, my favorite band.

I first started liking them when I heard "Your Love is a Song" at a concert. (They opened for the Goo Goo Dolls)

My friend liked them and wanted to go, too, so i checked them out.

After listening to the recorded version, i Fell in love with "Your Love is a Song". The lyrics are unbelievable, the tune THE BEST.

But anyways. The Album.

I listened to samples, and decided to run out and buy the CD.It opened with Needle and Haystack Life, one of my faves on the album, (according to iTunes i listened to it 56 times) an upbeat and catchy song. Lots of bass, and it was a GREAT opener to the album. Next was Mess of Me, a more natural Switchfoot song. It was equal to the songs in previous albums, like Oh! Gravity. "Your love is a Song" is my absolute favorite song. According to iTunes, i've listened to it on my iPod 147 Times. I cannot even describe this song. Best song on the album. The Sound (John M. Perkins Blues) goes back to that "Mess of Me" and "Oh! Gravity" style song. "Enough to Let me Go" is unlike any other Switchfoot song, and it sounds similer to "The Man who can't be Moved" by The Script. I don't care much for "Free", as it tried to go along the lines of Oh! Gravity, but ended up sounding a mix of "Mess of Me" and "Awakening". "Hello Hurricane" is another one of my favorites, (47 times) and it sounds similer to "Awakening", and most of Switchfoot's newer songs, as they are pulling away from true Alternative. "Always" is a calm, beautiful song, similer to the endings "Red Eyes" and "Sing it Out". "Bullet Soul" is probobly the most Alternative song on the album. "Yet" is strangly similer to "Enough to let me Go", and "Sing it Out" is just plain beautiful. The ending of "Red Eyes" makes the entire album worth listening to. It flashes back to "Needle and Haystack Life" in a foggy, unclear way that makes it Beautiful.

Buy. Buy. Buy.
Go buy the best Album that you will EVER listen to.

3uninspired, probably still worth buying  Aug 12, 2010
I count Switchfoot among my favorite bands. I LOVED Oh! Gravity. Every song on that album was fresher and more unique than the last (with the possible exception of Awakening, which is still an excellent song but pretty standard Switchfoot fare). They really experimented with their sound and came up with some incredibly creative stuff, including gems like "Faust, Midas, and Myself" and "Circles". To put it simply, Oh! Gravity blew my mind.

Hello Hurricane underwhelmed me. I might even say it was a disappointment. The band appears to have listened to nothing but 90's grunge, U2, and generic contemporary Christian music for the last three years. Switchfoot still sounds like Switchfoot, mostly because of Jon Foreman's unique (incredible!) voice, but this is Switchfoot writing uninteresting riffs and poorly conceived melodies. I suppose it's still pretty good as a modern rock album, but compared to the brilliance of Oh! Gravity (and The Beautiful Letdown, etc.) it's barely worth listening to.

However, the one exceptional track on the album, "Hello Hurricane", almost makes up for all of that. "Hello Hurricane" is a great Switchfoot song, with a subtle, catchy verse, a loud, melodic chorus, and solid lyrics. I've got to say, it's pretty much worth buying this album for that song alone, and you can form your own opinions on the rest of it.

Basically, if you are a big fan of Switchfoot, buy this album.

5"Hello Hurricane" is very good...and painfully overlooked  Aug 09, 2010
When Switchfoot signed a major label deal with Columbia Records, it seemed like a great partnership- for a limited time, at least. Out the gate they saw success with their multi-platinum album "The Beautiful Letdown" which gave them big radio hits like "Meant To Live" and "Dare You To Move". By the time the 2005 follow-up "Nothing Is Sound" was released, things started to get shaky between them and the label. Ironically, their best album was a moderate seller, only reaching Gold status. Then, their 2006 album "Oh! Gravity" came and went without so much as a single. So the band went on hiatus- basically trying to get out of their contract. In the interim, lead singer Jonathan Foreman delivered the side project Fiction Family, a collaboration album with Sean Watkins of the bluegrass band Nickel Creek.

Now Switchfoot have returned, albeit with a couple of changes. Their new album "Hello Hurricane" is their first album for Atlantic Records and joining them on this new album is Dr. Dre protege Mike Elizondo, who previously produced Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine", Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" and half of Rilo Kiley's "Under The Blacklight". The album starts off with "Needle And Haystack Life" and leads into the fast-paced "Mess Of Me". The acoustic driven "Enough To Let Me Go" is a song just asking for heavy radio rotation- as is the case with "Bullet Soul". There are a couple of ballads on this record, such as "Yet" and the string laden "Sing It Out". The album closes with the inspirational "Red Eyes". As great as this album is, it's missing something- like promotion. This project could have gotten more noteriety if there were better choices for singles. Even if you hate Christian rock, you will love this album. Do not pass this one up.

5Best Album So Far  Aug 05, 2010
This album is Switchfoot's best work. It was worth the wait between records. As soon as I heard the first track I knew it was going to be a great album. If you love Coldplay, U2, or Brandon Bee, then you will love this album.
