Love it! May 02, 2009 I absolutely love The Virgins. They are so original and their music is so different from anything else out there today. Right now this is one of my favorite albums and I never get tired of it. Everyone should buy it because I'm sure you'll love it as much as me!
Similar but different Mar 08, 2009 This group reminds me of a cross between franz ferdinand and the beatles...they've got that british rock/pop sound, yet have some funk and maybe some sounds you would have heard in music from the 80's. Very catchy...its like you can listen to the lyrics and they can make you think (some are funny and satirical) or you can just let go and its easy to listen to with a nice upbeat mood. I like the newer versions that are less gritty but the original version is available. My fave song is "one week of danger".
New York is gritty? Feb 01, 2009 I can't help but think of the New York East Village when I read the criticisms of this album. Ten years ago it was dark, gritty, raw, and scary. Now it's slick, clean, and devoid of the angst and energy of CBGB's.
And so goes the full length album debut of The Virgins. Despite the "cleaning up" that many complain about, this is a dang good album! It's full of hooks, catchy melodies, and fun. I can't get "She's Expensive" out of my head for weeks after hearing it.
Is this the most original album ever? Heck no. The melodies and rhythms are hardly "virgins,"-- you get the feeling they've gotten around before. But for people who like Franz Ferdinand, The Futureheads, The Killers, or even The Ting Tings, you'll love this one!
No filler! Jan 06, 2009 The album consists of ten sharp, punchy, and well-produced tunes. If you're a fan of the Cars, Elvis Costello, and Strokes and don't mind occasionally snarky lyrics, this is a fantastic listen all the way through!
I don't understand those pining for the "grittier" sound of the EP. It wasn't exactly lo-fi. It was a fairly clean sounding demo for a band that has the kind of strong songs that really shine when polished.
It's a very solid 4 star album (I'm stingy with the 5 star ratings unlike some other reviewers), but I tacked on a star to compensate for the ridiculous one star reviews based on a single song.
Totally solid album from front to back. Nov 12, 2008 I don't know why everyone is slandering this album. The production is solid and perhaps it takes away some of the grit that New York rock has become famous for, but the good outweighs the bad. The Virgins are one part The Strokes with fresh modern grooves, one part Franz Ferdinand with their dancy pop-rock, and one part early 80s Police...Just fresh all around. How many rock bands legitimately make you want to dance these days? Here's one to add to your playlist. Do yourself this favor.
